The 3 things you SHOULD know about fuel contamination!

Water Contamination or AdBlue Contamination

Water contaminated fuel, whether it's petrol or diesel, is certainly a significant matter to take care of in a motor vehicle - particularly in more modern common-rail engines.

Putting water or AdBlue inside your fuel tank will often contribute to idling issues, irregular running, abnormal smoke and, if it is not addressed correctly, in some cases broken injectors. Water in petrol is less complicated to clean out in comparison with water in diesel - mainly because diesel is an oil. Nevertheless we are able to resolve both cases rather easily.

Remember that so long as the vehicle was started with the water contaminated fuel it will quite possible require a new fuel filter to be fitted since the previous one will be totally water-logged and unusable.

Boat Fuel Drains

If you find you've got the incorrect fuel, or contaminated fuel (most commonly water contamination or degraded fuel) in a boat we can help clean it out. Providing the boat is either on land, or situated close to a car parking bay we should be able to reach the fuel storage tanks and remove the fuel. We have performed numerous fuel drains at marinas and boatyards nationwide.

Ahhh, that was a great night's uninterrupted sleep! 7:00 am on a warm Monday and I was on the way to assist an old lady who put petrol in her diesel faithful Land Rover Freelander in Clayton-le-Woods. I'd been told she had left the petrol station and pulled up in a country road en route to pay a visit to her family. I popped her location straight into the TomTom and was with her within an hour or so. I turned up at the car and removed the wrong fuel from the car. Whilst I was doing the drain she explained, "Now I'm getting fairly forgetful in my old age and did not remember about the vehicle taking diesel because I'd only just acquired it a few days back right after my former car, which I had for over 30 years, eventually broke down". I completed the drain and she presented me a toffee and said thanks a lot. What a pleasant Lancashire lady!

Wrong Fuel in Car Lancashire - Petrol in Diesel Car Clayton-le-Woods

I'm not excessively interested in working weekends, and the other day was no different. I had just left home following a magnificent Sunday roast made by the missus, and I was on my way to sort out a fellow because he put the wrong fuel in his mustard yellow Honda Civic GX. He was somewhere in Clayton-le-Woods therefore it wouldn't be long before I reached him. Just as I drove up at the car and started work he explained to me "Praise the Almighty! I foolishly had my attention on other considerations and failed to realise I have put diesel in my petrol vehicle. Have I brought about damage because of driving it?" I revealed truth be told there should not be any kind of harm and that also I'd personally drain the fuel as soon as possible for him. Obviously I removed the contaminated fuel from the vehicle and filled up with the appropriate fuel, and so yet another pleased customer could carry on with his journey without the hassle. The guy could not stop thanking me, and that is exactly what tends to make operating on weekends in Lancashire just that little bit less painful for me!

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VA receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
